Understanding UL Welded Sprinkler Pipe for Building Fire Protection

July 17, 2025
Hello Pipe Enthusiasts !

Continuing from the previous #SEAPIPipeInsights article, "Introducing Our Superior Steel Pipe Products: SIO, BOS, BRATA, SENA, and XL", this edition focuses on a key type of steel pipe used in active fire protection systems: UL Welded Sprinkler Pipe. Designed to meet international safety standards, this product plays a vital role in systems such as sprinklers and hydrants in commercial, industrial, and public facility projects.

UL as a Global Safety Standards Organization
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is an independent organization based in the United States, established in 1894. From its inception, UL’s mission has been to ensure public safety through product testing and the development of technical standards. One of its core contributions is the UL Standard for Safety for Metallic Sprinkler Pipe for Fire Protection Service, more commonly known as UL 852.

This standard serves as a global reference for selecting steel pipes in fire suppression systems, particularly for sprinkler networks. UL 852 outlines requirements for performance testing, connection reliability, and corrosion resistance, and mandates that compliant products carry official UL Listed marking.

ERW Pipe: The Approved Manufacturing Method under UL
In practice, UL 852 primarily applies to steel pipes manufactured using the Electric Resistance Welded (ERW) method, which joins hot rolled steel coils using high-frequency electric current. This process produces a longitudinal seam with consistent precision, making it ideal for both threaded and plain-end connections in sprinkler systems.

All UL pipes used are constructed from Hot Rolled Coils (HRC) that conform to relevant ASTM and ASME standards. Threaded ends comply with ANSI B1.20.1, ensuring compatibility during installation. The product range includes Schedule 40 steel pipes in nominal sizes from ½ inch to 12 inch, manufactured in accordance with ASTM A53, Grade A, Type E, the industry-standard ERW specification for low- to medium-pressure fire protection systems.

UL Pipe by BPI: A Globally Certified Fire Protection Solution
As part of the same corporate group, Bakrie Pipe Industries (BPI), the parent company of Southeast Asia Pipe Industries (SEAPI), has introduced a dedicated line of UL ERW Sprinkler Pipes ranging from ½ inch to 12 inch in nominal size. These products are available in black varnish (temporary coating) and galvanized steel finishes, support various connection types, and have proven their performance through testing and official certification in accordance with international standards.
They are commonly used for:
  • Main and branch sprinkler lines
  • Valve trim piping and indoor hydrant systems
  • Building projects requiring compliance with safety inspections and fire codes
The presence of UL Listed markings on BPI's UL pipes serves as evidence of product reliability and readiness for installations subject to stringent technical audits aligned with NFPA standards and regional regulations.
